If RFK Sr. hadn't been shot, I'm sure he would have been elected. This would have left Nixon a two time loser, and no one outside of Washington, D.C. would ever have known what Watergate meant.

Maybe. I know RFK was popular, I just wonder how much of that was people superimposing JFK on him.

Yes- I forget JFK barely beat Nixon. That TV debate gave him the edge.

JFK's EV margin over Nixon was basically the same as Nixon's over Humphrey. Eight years isn't a huge amount of time in presidential politics so yeah, RFK had a real chance at taking the national.
