Reading Recap, week 41
We're getting back into it.
Post a Recommendation
2007, Literally me at a baseball game with my friends, reading a book, because baseball is boring.
Got anything you’re reading that’s good and for Halloween ambience? Anything you want to plug? Anything you need a reviewer’s eyes on? HMU in the comments.
A note on review books: if you’ve sent me one and I haven’t responded, I either haven’t gotten to it yet or it just wasn’t for me. Which I hate saying—I’m an author too, it’s never fun to hear that. The more I read though, the more I appreciate whether I am or am not in the target audience for a piece.
I largely don’t do negative reviews. Occasionally I’ll talk about something I don’t like in a genre or in any type of book, just because it can be instructive or good to discuss, but I don’t make it a point to shred stuff. My purpose is to find books that I actually want to read and share.
Audiobooks
I finished one review book that I can’t mention yet, but it was actually really freaking good, so as soon as I get the green light from the publisher I’ll do a video. I sent some beta feedback to the editor that was mostly centered on content and technical details. The story itself was very strong and well-executed.
Also finished a re-read of SPELL CHECK by Julie Wright. Did a video on the channel for that one.
And I’m doing short summary videos on The October Country collection by Ray Bradbury, which is mostly good.
Print and Comics
It’s a five-Wednesday month so the release schedule is wonky. Nothing last week and only one book this week, but next week I get three, so it all washes out. REDCOAT #6 wraps the main story tastefully and on October 30th I get REDCOAT #7, billed as an epilogue. Out of the Ghost Machine titles this one is not as high on my list as ROOK EXODUS or GEIGER yet it’s still fantastic, way better than anything from Energon Universe right now.
Since I don’t want to spoil anything, I’ll just say that the immortal Simon Pure finally has a big showdown with the immortal Benedict Arnold in the late 1800s, while a young Albert Einstein stands by to watch. There’s a surprise arrival a secret figure at the very end of the book that I’m WAY STOKED to know more about, so I’m happy to buy #7 this month.
I also took some time to read a print book on the Mayflower so I can have that
review up for November. This one has a unique angle. Won’t describe it too much just yet.
Next Week
I’ve got another Speechify book I need to read, it’s a review copy and the concept has potential. We’ll see how many more of the October Country stories end up on the channel, and I have some more Halloween-themed stuff to get to. The real treat is gonna be the comic book haul. More on that as it comes.
I’ve also slated one long book to get through, might do that in two weeks. It’s the biography of Jefferson Davis which I’ve been meaning to read. Wonder what I’ll think of the dude when it’s done.

I absolutely feel you on BaseBall... and I love BaseBall. It is a great excuse to read a book on a beautiful summer day, surrounded by beer and humanity.💖
