Reading Recap, week 38
Watching a friend level up
Audiobooks
I only finished one book, work had me frustrated so I had a few “blast the workout playlist” days. The one finished was by Brett Cain, and it was a marked improvement over the first book in his series (which wasn’t bad, but didn’t rock my world either—just a good barometer of what to expect from the Frank Sawyer series). I like watching people reap rewards for effort.
Print and Comics
I covered this week’s comics in a video. I think Geiger wrapped up its current arc and is heading toward the next leg of his story, which I’m interested in reading. I think the downside of having a pull file and reading these one issue at a time is you end up slogging through the story, versus buying the collected volume at the end and just reading that. It FEELS slower than it is. This one still gave me plenty to appreciate, not least of all the character growth for Geiger’s dog Barney
I finally got my ThatUmbrellaGuy comics that I backed two and a half years ago on IndieGoGo. TUG is a YouTube personality who specializes in covering domestic abuse cases, which is an odd niche but he’s very qualified in that arena, and he was one of the first/loudest online to take an interest in Johnny Depp’s defense, about two years BEFORE he won his case against his ex-wife. That’s the only reason I know anything about him, and in 2022 he also happened to be working on a comic in a series centered on his YT character.
Overall I gave it three stars, it was a light and meaningless piece of Lovecraftian-flavored fluff about a detective whose little daughter helps him solve cases. Not a whole lot for you to sink your teeth into if you’re not a fan of TUG himself. Thought about covering them in a video, but eh. I’ve got them on my shelf and I won’t worry about getting more.
Next Week
I’m pretty sure this week’s comic is Destro #4, and maybe Redcoat #6. In print I might take some time on an Elmore Leonard that I’ve got, but I’m really hitting my stride with The Silmarillion so I’m keeping my options open there. Audio-wise I’m tackling a larger book, that being the biography of Frank Herbert, along with another gonzo indie sci-fi that I expect I’ll enjoy. We’ll see.
Consider becoming a paid subscriber so that I can afford my healthy habit of buying good books and comics.
