I finished TROUBLE WALKED IN by Mike Kupari, we’re gonna nickname this book “Dick Space-y.” If he wrote a sequel or two in this setting, I’d like it. He wanted to write a detective noir story set in space, striking a balance between methods of yesteryear and tech of the future, and he really struck the right chords. My only knock is that the characters and story beats were a strong echo of his previous book, THE FAMILY BUSINESS. Which isn’t necessarily negative. Both books are good, they’re just very very similar.
SHILOH by Shelby Foote was my introduction to this man’s work, which is good because he’s written a lot of historical nonfiction and I’ve been meaning to try him out. It’s a short book that explores life in battle during the Civil War from both Union and Confederate perspectives.
Also I read maybe half of GLORY ROAD by Heinlein. It started strong but my interest petered, so I didn’t finish. Nevertheless it brought me to some realizations I discussed in the above video.
Print/Comics
Thought it was time for ROOK EXODUS #5, but no, that’s this week. The only comic was VOID RIVALS #12, which managed to recover some of the interest that previous issues lost for me. You can tell they were saving a hint for the final book of this arc and the needed to wait until now to drop it, but they didn’t necessarily have enough to fill the pages to get there. It ended tastefully, I just want them to work on the substance and the pacing.
I have a strong feeling that they’re working towards Unicron in the Energon Universe. Darak and Solila touched foreheads and those little Energon chits connected, which woke up something deep in space, something the size of a planet. If that’s not Unicron, it’s his ilk.
Technically I didn’t finish WORLD BREAKERS, I might pick it up again later, but for now I’m done. Cool concept but I can only read so many stories at once that are about the same thing.
Next Week
Okay, so we’re definitely getting ROOK EXODUS #5, I confirmed that with my LCS. The next Transformers book doesn’t drop until Sept. 11 so unfortunately I think I’m getting another Scarlett on Wednesday. Ugh. Let it end.
In print I’m reading THE HOT KID by Elmore Leonard. Gritty writer. Likes to slip in the sex here and there, but I do like his protagonist.
Got some audiobooks on deck, but I’ve been scrapping stuff a lot lately so I won’t list them here. We’ll see what I get through next week.
