Reading Recap, week 26
THE BEAST IS SLAIN
Audiobooks
Let’s get the big SOB out of the way: I FINALLY FINISHED SHOGUN. Boy howdy, it feels good to be done with that. For a book that was very intriguing and enlightening in the first half, it went Full Metal Horny in the second half, as I described in the penultimate video that I furnished on the subject.
I’ll put up my final thoughts/summary this week. For now you can find my whole playlist of SHOGUN videos in this link. I gave it three stars because of how much of a slog it was. Yes yes, it’s a significant literary work, etc etc. Don’t care. I was bored.
I also read NUMBER GO UP by Zeke Faux (short version: crypto is sketchy AF and NFTs are a straight-up scam), and after watching the series with the wife I decided to read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (far, far better than I expected it to be).
I’m working on a script for a video where I’ll compare the novel, the series, and the film. I’m going to have a LOT of fun with that.
Print and Comics
The massive surprise on this front is that after saying I didn’t want to read GEIGER by Geoff Johns, I picked it up…and freaking loved it. I don’t care for mutated people in radioactive wastelands because I’ve read so many books in that genre and they’re all dour, gritty, grungy, tryhard crap. If GEIGER wasn’t connected to the five-star superpower that is JUNKYARD JOE, I would never have bothered.
What makes the difference? Well, Geoff Johns is overseeing the entire Unnamed Series. He’s writing ROOK: EXODUS, and REDCOAT, and JUNKYARD JOE, and GEIGER. And the dude is writing the hell out of it all. Stay tuned to the channel, I’ve got a video coming soon about it.
The art was better than I thought it was going to be, but what matters more is that the story and the characters have actual heart and heroism. It’s a dog-eat-dog survival world where morality has been muddied and laws are only as good or bad as whoever is holding the gun, yet in the middle of it all you’ve got people reaching for something higher and nobler. More, more, more please.
