Reading Recap, week 10
A best-of-year book appears
Last week I finished three books.
THE WATCHMAN by Arthur T. Bradley is about a cowboy who can solve paranormal crimes. On the orders of President Cleveland (first term) he heads to Texas to figure out why a bunch of kids keep disappearing from town, only to reappear a day later with no memory of what happened. Along the way he will be propositioned by hot women and make enemies of fierce but lesser men. I’ve never read anything by Bradley before but he’s got a powerful, attractive, and dangerous name, so his writing is pretty good. Content warning for some language. 3.5/5 stars.
NO SURRENDER by Hiro Onoda is a nonfiction memoir by a Japanese soldier who refused to believe that WW2 was over. He remained on active duty for 30 years until he finally returned home in 1974. This book explains the how and the why of it all. Incredible account, it’s on my best of 2024 list.
THE KING’S GOLD is the fourth novel in The Adventures of Captain Alatriste by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It was an improvement over the third and quite enjoyable, focusing on Alatriste and his friends as they try to seize a treasure ship on their way back to Madrid from Flanders (1624). I’m now halfway through these books.
This week I have some library holds to read, and some comics. Stay tuned here and subscribe to my YouTube channel for more.
