Reading Recap 2024, week 3
The Legend of Perley Gates and Disquiet Gods
I finished two books last week.
One was a western by William and J.A. Johnstone called THE LEGEND OF PERLEY GATES. I rate it 4/5 and there’s a video coming out on my YouTube channel tomorrow, so go over there and subscribe if you haven’t.
The other book was a hefty bugger called DISQUIET GODS by Christopher Ruocchio.
If you missed my introduction to his work last year, check out the article at this link. Basically he’s writing a massive space opera that spans centuries, focusing on one long-lived character as he peels back the layers on the mysteries of the universe.
It’s hard to summarize this series so I don’t bother trying any longer. There are individual book summaries on Ruocchio’s on YT channel. He describes it as “Anakin Skywalker destroys a sun and eradicates a whole species, and he’s right to do so.” He slowly walks you there one thousand pages at a time, and there are definitely times when I want him to pick up the pace, but I’m still reading, so he wins.
Book six had some of the most rewarding developments to date, which is satisfying, and it will only drive up hype for the seventh and final volume. Happy for Ruocchio and his success, I’ll be happy to see how and why this series ends the way it does.
I’ve officially read everything I set out to read for January, so this week is kind of a free-play session for me. I have a handful of books I want to get to, so I’ll knock them out. Right now the plan is to pick at XENOS by Abnett, GRAVEYARD SHIFT by Haspil, and a Teddy Roosevelt book that I’ve been meaning to look at. And Friday I’ll be picking up new comic books at my LCS.
Thanks for reading. If you want, check out my Premium Poasts where I put up an old manuscript of mine one chapter at a time, with some notes. You’ll have to become a paid subscriber to read them.
