MHI Character List: You Need To Catch Up
MHI Recaps, part 1
This year we’re getting two new MHI books from Larry Correia. The first is an anthology (MH Files #2) and the second is a novel in the Owen Pitt saga. It’s been 3 years since we got an MHI book of any stripe and 4 since we had one in the main series, so here’s a bit of catch-up for you.
Click the links to see the character wikis, you’ll get some cool artwork over there. I’ve included Owen’s image for reference.
Newbie Squad
Owen Pitt: Main character. Mid-20s, raised by a military father who was hard on him and his brother. Blunt and practical, anti-authoritarian. Proficient at hand-to-hand combat and good with firearms. He finds out about monsters when he’s working late one night and his boss—a werewolf—attacks him. Owen literally turns the tables and kills his boss.
Trip Jones: Around the same age as Owen. Black guy from Florida, former runningback and high school teacher. A zombie outbreak turned his school into monsters and he had to kill a lot of his former students to survive.
Holly Newcastle: Blonde, former stripper and nursing student from Vegas. Rescued from a vampire feeding pit. Extremely good at killing monsters and not afraid to get her hands dirty. Eventually she’ll have to receive a vampire’s death because of how she was fed on. She’s got the gene.
Albert Lee: Asian-American and former librarian. Like many other newbies he encountered monsters at work but didn’t just roll over and die. Survived newbie training at MHI but got badly injured in an early mission. Stayed on as the company’s librarian and archivist.
Mordecai Byreika: Not technically alive, he’s the ghost of a deceased Hunter who can contact Owen from time to time, because Owen is a Chosen One. He helps the Hunters prepare for Lord Machado’s arrival.
MHI Family and Employees
Julie Shackleford: Descendant of Bubba Shackleford who started MHI back in the late 1800s. Hot librarian type (brunette with glasses). Raised among monster hunters, exceptionally good at it. Originally dating Grant Jefferson but they break up in book one and she gets involved with Owen.
Earl Harbinger: Secretly a werewolf and a team leader for MHI, he’s one of the many Ray Shacklefords in the mix (they get up to 5 as the series progresses). Operates under an alias since he doesn’t age. He’s “PUFF-exempt,” meaning even though he’s a monster, he can’t be hunted for bounty cash.
Grant Jefferson: Movie-star good looks and generally good in combat, was dating Julie Shackleford until he left Owen to die in the middle of an operation. (His decision to do was kinda defensible but also kinda cowardly and you can’t do that in this job.) He leaves MHI and later goes to work for the government.
Milo Anderson: The team’s mad scientist and gunsmith, among other things. Talented inventor, jack of many trades, very practical, good at killing monsters. Makes fast friends with Owen. Has an epic red beard.
Skippy, Gretchen, and Edward: There is a tribe of orcs who live on MHI’s land, but they’re not PUFF-exempt, so the Hunters keep them hidden from the MCB. Each orc has one thing at which they are exceptionally talented. Skippy flies a helicopter, Gretchen is a healer, and Edward is a swordsman. These are awesome characters.
The MCB
Agent Dwayne Myers: Former MHI Hunter who parted ways with the company after something big and bad happened, and a bunch of Hunters died. Kind of has it out for them, and he’s a thorn in their shoe.
Agent Franks: Secretly the monster from Doctor Frankenstein’s laboratory, but now he works for the MCB. Long story. He has a contract with the United States government, it’s secretly one of our Founding documents. You learn his history in MH Nemesis.
Bad Guys
Lord Machado: A Portuguese conquistador who came to the Americas five hundred years ago and got involved with local ritualistic voodoo-juju, becoming somewhat immortal (cursed) in the process. Returns in the present day to try to reign over the Earth.
The Tattooed Man: A loyal servant of Lord Machado who does his bidding while Machado tries to take physical form again.
Susan and Ray Shackleford: Julie’s parents. Susan is a master vampire, and she bites Ray in the first book so she can have him with her as his mate. She wants to bring Julie into the fold as well. She’s a recurring problem.
It’s better if I start with the character list, and later I’ll do individual book recaps. Stay tuned for the summary of book 1.
