I read 13 books in August and aborted 1

1 made the best-of-year list

I wasn’t able to hit 100 in July, but I made it in the first few days of August. The total is now 112. Here’s the breakdown.

100) Unknown Soldier—Killan. I’ve got a review drafted for this one at Upstream, I really want to boost the signal for Jace Killan. This was a good book. Ex-con goes to work with the FBI to uncover a link between the Mexican drug cartels and pseudo-ISIS.

101) Yumi/Nightmare Painter—Sanderson. The third of four secret Sanderson books. Thought it was fine.

102) MHM Fever—Correia/Cordova. Gonna do a video/Upstream combo for this one, but it’s a very strong entry in the series, and I prefer it even over some of the main series books.

103) Time Trial—Rothman/Butler. Covered it here, an Egyptologist gets sent back in time to compete with other Earth champions against ancient gods like Seth and his cohorts.

104) Mercury 4—Kroese. My favorite of the Mercury series. Should write up my thoughts for the Stack.

105) Son of the Black Sword—Correia. You can read my recap on Upstream or watch the YouTube video (linked in the article.)

106) Warrior Poet’s Way—Lovell. Fine, not bad, lotta familiar content if you run in the same circles I do.

107) Planetes 1—Yukimura. Incredible. Review is here.

108) Fablehaven 1—Mull. We’re reading these to my kids and they love it.

109) Bad Place to Be a Hero—Westinger. Covered it here.

110) ISOM 2—July. Covered it in this video. Two books in, I enjoy what Eric’s doing, and I’m very interested in Alphacore.

111) Vein Pursuits—Bruno/Castle. Eh. I think I’m done with this series. They have an audience and I’m happy for them, I’m just not in it.

112) 3 Years Quantrill—McCorkle/Brian. Interesting firsthand account of a smaller episode in the Civil War.

Inheritance—Paolini. Thought I could get back into this series, but nah, I’ve kind of “read myself out of” the audience. That said, I’m still interested in trying his Murtaugh book that comes out this fall. Murtaugh was always the more interesting character to me.
