2024, By The Numbers
How much I read this year
Last year I did this in a livestream on the channel, I think this year I’ll post it on the Stack. It’ll save time that way. Here are the stats for what I read in 2024:
Total books:
142, as of 12/27. I’m not going to push to read any next week, I’m just taking it easy until New Year’s.
Physical books:
28, which includes a couple of comic book compendia and graphic novels.
Audiobooks:
114—Some of them were as short as 2 hours (very few of these), and the longest was SHOGUN by James Clavell, which was close to 54 hours overall. On average I listen at about 1.75x speed. A fast-talking narrator is like fast-paced music and it helps me work faster.
Comic books:
This is actually tough to count. Do I go by individual issues, or volumes? I don’t know, suffice it to say that I’ve read a LOT of comics this year. Most of my print reading has been comics or graphic novels.
Re-reads:
I revisited 13 titles that I’d already read in the past, including three of the Captain Alatriste novels, two of the Leviathan novels, and two Forgotten Warrior novels. Next year this number will probably go up.
Best-of-year:
Also 13 titles. I’ll probably do a video on these.
Did-not-finish:
Now, I didn’t track every single one of these, because there were some books I ditched after just a few minutes or pages, for various reasons. But from what I tracked, the number is 16. These are not represented in the 142 overall count.
Busiest month:
Three-way tie between January, July, and November. I read 14 books in each of those months. In January I was burning hard because two of those books were from Ruocchio’s Sun Eater series, which is substantial.
Shortest month:
August, with only 7 titles. I took a road trip with my family so I didn’t read much for about nine days.
That about sums it up. Next year I’ve got some great titles on deck and I’m excited to see what I discover.
Thanks for reading.
